REVIEW BY KEN RATNER, CURATOR AND COLLECTOR

Too many of today's artists use shortcuts in producing pictures that look as if they were mass produced in an assembly line. Not so with Joseph Grieco. He is an artist of the highest order whose paintings are executed with great skill and careful thought. Grieco has embraced and mastered the tonalist technique, a method used by masters of the past, such as George Inness and J. Francis Murphy. His pictures offer a whispered invitation to quite contemplation.

His recent one-man show at the Salmagundi Club, an honor well deserved, gave viewers an opportunity to study and marvel at his tonalist landscapes, as well as some executed in an impressionist fashion. What a joy to behold these poetic masterworks. Joseph Grieco could very well be the greatest tonalist painter in America today.
